We operate two schools: Matchbook Learning at Wendell Phillips School 63, serving students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, and The Match High School and Career Center, which currently serves 9th grade students and will expand to include 9th and 10th grade students in the fall of 2025.

We are currently seeking a Special Education Teacher to join our Middle School Team at Matchbook Learning at Wendell Phillips School 63 for the 2025-2026 school year.
Position Overview
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs in an inclusive and resource classroom setting. The ideal candidate will foster a positive and engaging learning environment, collaborate with educators and parents, and ensure that students receive the support necessary to achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
These are the key responsibilities of a Special Education Teacher. Special Education Teachers may have other duties as assigned.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique needs of each student.
- Adapt lesson plans and teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles and disabilities.
- Provide direct instruction in academic subjects, social-emotional development, and life skills.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, specialists, and support staff to ensure inclusive education practices.
- Conduct regular assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Maintain detailed records of student progress, behavior, and accommodations.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and caregivers regarding student progress and strategies for support.
- Utilize assistive technology and other resources to enhance student learning and accessibility.
- Foster a safe, positive, and structured classroom environment that supports student growth.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current on best practices in special education.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Certification: Valid state teaching certification in Special Education (K-8 or equivalent endorsement).
- Experience: Proven experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of IEP development and implementation.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and employ evidence-based teaching strategies.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in classroom management techniques tailored to diverse learning needs.
- Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, bend, kneel, and sit on the floor to work with students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or other specialized intervention strategies.
- Training in de-escalation techniques and behavior management strategies.
- Familiarity with assistive technology and adaptive learning tools.
- Bilingual proficiency (Spanish, ASL, or other languages is a plus).
