Full-Time  |  Salary Range: $51,500.00 - $75,000.00  |  Reports to: SPED Coordinator

Position Summary

Matchbook Learning is looking for a dedicated K–8 Special Education Teacher to join our Special Education Team at Wendell Phillips School 63. In this role, you'll partner closely with students with disabilities, their families, and general education staff to make sure every learner gets the support and services they need to thrive — inside a small, mission-driven school where you'll know every student by name.

Why Matchbook Learning

We're a close-knit, non-profit charter network built on personalized learning and restorative practices — not red tape. You'll work in small, collaborative teams where your voice shapes how we support kids, backed by a leadership team that invests heavily in coaching and professional growth (including a clear path toward roles like SPED Coordinator). If you want a school where every child is truly known, loved, and pushed to flourish — and where your own growth matters just as much — this is that place.

Key Responsibilities

Special Education Instruction & Case Management

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Deliver specially designed instruction in both inclusion and pull-out settings
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support students in accessing the general curriculum
  • Participate in case conferences, student support meetings, and MTSS processes
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student progress, services provided, and parent communication
  • Conduct regular assessments and use data to inform instruction and goal-setting
  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment
  • Communicate regularly with parents, service providers, and other stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and all IDOE special education requirements
  • Participate in professional development and school-wide initiatives

Qualifications

Required

  • An entrepreneurial heart and mindset — serving in a turnaround school takes both the courage to take on a challenge with massive potential and the humility to try, fail, and try again
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Valid Indiana Teaching License with Special Education certification (or eligible out-of-state equivalent)
  • Ability to stay flexible in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to inclusive practices and differentiated instruction

Preferred

  • At least two years of teaching experience in an urban or low-income setting
  • A demonstrated record of classroom success (lead-teacher experience preferred; strong student teaching or assistant experience considered)
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze student data to guide instruction
  • Familiarity with IEP writing systems and online platforms (e.g., IIEP)
  • Knowledge of behavioral support strategies and trauma-informed practices
